The monumental building of Vischpoorte is situated in the heart of the old town centre, a stone's throw away from the River IJssel.
This is a historical place that was visited by merchants from all over Europe, who entered the village via the IJssel through the so-called Vischpoorte, the city gate.
The gate was named after the nearby fish markets, where fresh and salt-water fish were sold.
This is one of the oldest (dating back to the turn of the 14th century) and most important gates of the city.
